Stress Management

Stress Management: What You Need To Know

Carl Walker

Stress management is the relief or attempted relief of stress. Stress can be caused by any number of mitigating factors and stress management has become an important tool in the world today. With advances in psychiatry and psychology, more and more is becoming known about stress, thus mproving the individual capability in managing stress.

While there are many different methods for stress management, not all of them will work for everybody. One of the keys to stress management is finding an effective personal tool for fighting stress. Some individuals use little soft squeezable items, some people use primal scream therapy, some people take up hobbies, many people find running an effective means of stress management. Whatever means an individual decides on using, it should be something that is readily available to them.

Stress management is of ever increasing importance in the world today. Stress has many causes including coming from the home, from work and from a large number of outside sources over which the individual has little or no control. Stress, like stress management is different for everyone individually. Stress can be caused by pressures at work or with children or spouses at home. Stress can be a direct result of deadlines or urgency created by circumstances surrounding us. Whatever the cause of the stress, finding a viable means of stress management is equally important to physical health and mental health.

Direct links have been found between levels of stress and physical health. It really is true that laughter is the best medicine. While this may sound simple enough, not everyone has the ability to laugh their stress away, nor can anyone, laugh at stress all the time. Finding an effective means of stress management is important for physical well-being. Stress is known to advance heart problems, headaches and prevent the body from healing itself effectively. An effective program for stress management is cientifically proven to keep people healthier for longer periods of time.

Many people own pets to help them relieve stress. Aquariums have been known to lower blood pressure and help in stress management while being low maintenance and easy to take care of. While this solution for stress management may not work for everyone, it is at least, one option.

Whether stress management is accomplished through a creative outlet like running or other personal hobbies, owning pets, or other means of vigorous physical effort which will lower the adrenal production to help reduce stress and stress levels in life, stress management is an important factor to consider. Stress management is not only an urgent need in today's fast-paced lifestyle, but an important factor in both physical and mental health.

Beneficial Treatment Options for Anxiety

Joanne King

Many people have to deal with anxiety disorders everyday. There are treatment options available that have been proven to help lessen the symptoms caused by anxiety disorders. You can get help with the symptoms, and make dealing with it much easier for you.

One of the best tools we have is knowledge. The more you learn about anxiety disorders, and how you are affected, the better equipped you will be to deal with it. Ask your doctor for any information he has, and then talk to others that you know of who also have anxiety disorders. The internet has a lot of valuable information, as well as your local library. Understanding all you can about anxiety disorders will help you better understand your own situation better. Learning what triggers your anxiety can be a great way to better deal with it, if you know what the triggers are. You can try to find ways to eliminate them from your lifestyle.

Anxiety makes your whole body go tense, and learning how to relax can help alleviate other symptoms, and make you feel better faster. Learn some relaxation techniques that you can use the next time you start to feel anxiety, such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga. Breathing too rapidly is one symptom caused by anxiety, and learning how to breathe in from your diaphragm, slowly and deeply, will help alleviate it.

Your doctor may suggest that you try cognitive therapy to help control your anxiety disorder. This type of therapy helps you learn to change the way you think in situations that cause you to feel anxiety, helping you to overcome your anxiety disorder.

Behavior therapy, in part, forces you to meet your fears head on, so that you can learn to be less afraid, less sensitive to them. When you begin behavior therapy, you will first list your fears in order from worst to least. Then you will start at the bottom and work your up, facing and learning to deal with each fear along the way. You will learn behaviors that can help you deal with anxiety while facing your fears, such as deep breathing, and other ways to cope. Once you have faced your fear, you will continue doing it until you have the confidence to move up the list. Eventually, you will learn how to face all of your fears, and not suffer from anxiety while doing it. You will be able to cope with these fearful situations should you face them on your own in the world outside of therapy.

Your anxiety treatment may be as simple as modifying your current eating habits. Research has shown that people who have a magnesium deficiency tend to be more likely to suffer from anxiety disorders and insomnia. Anxiety symptoms can also be worsened by not having enough calcium and vitamin B in your diet. Smoking and excessive caffeine intake can also cause your body to make more adrenaline, making you more prone to anxiety symptoms, as they are often caused by excess adrenaline being released. Modify your diet to include all of the necessary servings of the food groups, limit your intake of caffeine and processed foods, and see what impact it has on your life. If nothing else, you will be much healthier for it.

Alcohol also tends to worsen anxiety conditions. It may not seem that way, because it calms you at first, but once it has been in your system for a while, it starts to act as a stimulant, which often will lead to an anxiety attack.

Getting enough sleep is important to your overall well-being, because it gives your body time to energize and relax, and it helps you better able to deal with any stressful situations that may trigger an anxiety attack. One way to burn up all of the extra adrenaline your body produces is with exercise. Not only does it burn up adrenaline, making you less likely to have an anxiety attack, it helps you to relax. Exercise helps relieve muscle tension and soreness, is a good outlet for stress or frustration, and helps to increase your overall fitness and boost your energy level. To be safe, remember to confer with your doctor before you start a new exercise regimen. He may make recommendations on what would work best for you, especially if you have other health issues.

There is medication available for anxiety treatment. Many prescriptions are filled each day for medications to help people better deal with the stresses of our everyday lives. Medications can relieve the symptoms of anxiety disorder, but do you really want to have to take it for the rest of your life? There are other treatment options out there, that combined with these medicines, can help you eliminate the problem once and for all. Prescription medicines used to treat anxiety disorders often have many dangerous side effects, and cause major withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking them. Before taking any prescription anxiety medicine, you should do some research about the drug, learn about the way it works, and what the long term effects are. Drugs cannot help you alter your behavior, or learn ways to deal with anxiety triggers.

Some people also turn to alternative medicines for their anxiety treatment. Alternative medicines have become increasingly more popular within the last decade, partly due to the fewer side effects they cause than prescription medicines. Like prescription medicines, alternative medicines work to help relieve the symptoms of anxiety disorder, but they cannot cure it.

Before you consider taking any alternative medicine, you should do some research to make certain it is indicated as a treatment for anxiety, and that it does not conflict with any medications that you currently take. Be careful about what you take, and how much you take, to avoid more serious side effects and health issues. Some of the common alternative medicines for anxiety treatment are St. John's Wort, which usually takes effect within about six weeks, Valerian Root, which helps with insomnia, Kava Kava, which helps lessen anxiety and depression, and Passion Flower, which is know to alleviate some anxiety symptoms.

Three Breathing Techniques to Improve Your Life

Tony Strecker

Few people know how to breathe correctly and this can cause fatigue and unnecessary feelings of stress. It can also cause you to have difficulty falling asleep at night. The human body was designed to breathe using the diaphragm muscle rather than the chest. When you breathe using the diaphragm, your stomach will expand as the diaphragm extends into the abdomen, allowing the lungs to fully expand. This is known as "deep breathing".

Shallow breathing, or "chest breathing", is the technique most people use most of the time. This prevents the person from getting a true lung-full of air. The more stress you experience, the more shallow your breathing will become. This is where the feeling of tiredness comes from after a long, stressful day.

Everyone should practice deep breathing as a mean of reducing fatigue during the day. The technique is simple. Simple sit back in a comfortable chair anywhere and for five minutes practice deep breathing. This flood of oxygen coming into your body will bring feelings of energy and refreshment. As you go through the day, try to remind yourself to breathe deeply and at day's end, you will feel much less tired.

Stress can be relieved using breathing techniques along with visualization. Simple sit or lie down and get comfortable. Begin breathing deeply, fully utilizing the diaphragm to breathe. Imagine yourself in a peaceful, stress-free place of your choice. For many, the beach or a mountain stream may be a choice location. Whatever place makes you feel relaxed and happy is the place to allow your mind to take you. As you breathe out, imagine yourself releasing all the pent-up stress in your body. As you breathe in, imagine yourself finding peace and calmness. This technique can be practiced for a few minutes during the day, or for as much as 15 minutes at a time. If you continue much longer than 15 minutes, you will most likely find yourself drifting off to sleep.

Speaking of sleep, many people find getting to sleep after a busy day very difficult. By using the technique of correct deep breathing, sleep can come much more easily and sleep will then to be much deeper. As you relax in bed, begin breathing with the diaphragm. Starting with your toes, tense them then relax them. Move to the calf muscles; continue on to the tight muscles. Then tense and relax the buttocks, abdomen and back, shoulders, neck, face and scalp. While remaining in this newly relaxed state and still breathing properly and deeply, allow your mind to take you to your special peaceful place. If the tightness in all your muscles is not completely gone or you begin to tighten up again, you can perform the tense-relax technique while in your peaceful place in your mind. Stay in that peaceful place and allow relaxation to flood over you live a wave. If sleep still does not come, you can always use the Buddist meditation, "Breathing in I calm myself; breathing out, I find peace." Soon you will drift away into sleep.

The more you practice these techniques, the better you will become at achieving fast results. These are learned techniques, and therefore require practice. Soon you will find within only minutes of using the chosen technique for your situation at the moment, your mind, in conjunction with proper breathing, will allow you energy, lowered stress and faster, better-quality sleep.

The Importance of Resting Time

Minh Nguyen

Summer is a time for rest, relaxation, and a family vacation. But if you do not think you have time for a vacation, or that they're a waste of time, you could be hurting your health.

Researchers at the UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas remind us that getting away from our work and our everyday schedule is essential for good mental health and creativity. Vacations allow us to recharge our batteries and empty ourselves of everyday stress.

Vacations do not have to be expensive You do not have to spend a lot of money to have a relaxing vacation. Simply taking yourself away from the daily grind for awhile will help. Here are some ideas:

1. Spend your vacation time pursuing a favorite hobby, such as putting together a jigsaw puzzle, woodworking, or painting

2. Visit a friend or family member

3. Take walks in a local park

4. Join a club or try something new

5. Play games with your friends or family

Post-traumatic Vacation Disorder? Do not let the benefits of your vacation be eliminated by the stress of piles of work and e-mail, which can overwhelm you on your first day back in the office. Wrap up as much as possible before you leave and make a priority list of things to do when you get. And most importantly, relax. It will get done!

All work and no play? In our stressful society, vacations and "down time" are more important than ever. Yet nearly half of all full-time workers in the U. S. do not use all of their vacation time each year. On average, workers forfeit eight vacation days a year to their employers.

There are many reasons that Americans decide to forego their vacations, but the consequences are the same: increased stress, loss of creativity, and loss of energy. If workers continue to forfeit their vacations, over time the result may be burnout.

Symptoms of burnout Burnout is a state of physical or emotional exhaustion that results from long-term stress. There are numerous causes, including working long hours, low job satisfaction, excessive school work or studying, relationships that drain you of energy, being spread too thin, trying to be superman or superwoman, or trying to be perfect. Since we all experience these causes at some time or another, how do you know if you're burned out? You may have any of these symptoms:

1. Physical problems, such as fatigue, headaches, backaches, or stomachaches

2. Emotional exhaustion

3. Loss of enthusiasm for work, school, family, or friends

4. Feelings of helplessness or hopelessness

5. Depression

6. Inability to concentrate

7. Acts of hostility or emotional outbursts

Avoiding burnout The best way to avoid burnout is to care for your mental and emotional well-being. Follow these tips to help you reduce stress and avoid burnout:

1. Do not spread yourself too thin: learn to say "No."

2. Prioritize your work load and avoid working long hours.

3. Take regular 5-10 minute relaxation breaks.

4. Eat a healthy diet, exercise, and get plenty of sleep.

5. Be aware of any physical signs that may precede burnout, such as headaches, body aches, fatigue, or being sick often. Consult your physician if you have any of these symptoms.

6. Mentally remove yourself from your job, school, or other stressful situations and view it from an outsider point of view. If necessary, seek help from a counselor.

7. Do your best, but do not try to be perfect.

8. Take a vacation at least once a year!

If your schedule is a bit overwhelming, and you do not know what to do to balance your responsibilities, consult with your physician or with a counselor. They may be able to help. In the meantime, however, do not throw away your vacation time! Take advantage of summer and have some fun!
